Science Week 2025 saw students participate in another variety of colourful and informative sessions.

As in previous years, students had the opportunity to learn about colourful chemistry and get creative in the process by making their own artwork using knowledge of science.

Those with a keen interest in physics also had an opportunity to witness some amazing demonstrations and practical examples of how materials can be used in the wider world (such as neon lights) in the Plasma workshops.

Those who like our cute and furry friends were also catered for with a selection of activities ranging from meeting exotic creatures to the less glamourous aspects of animal work including dissecting owl pellets.

Lucky students made a visit to a special farm in a special wildlife setting on the coast in Mothercombe, all managed to support a huge diversity of wildlife.

A main focus of the visit included the barn owls who resided in the area, and later in the week, those students who enjoy a messy challenge had the opportunity to dissect the pellets of these owls collected on the visit, and had an opportunity to learn more about the food chains of the local area.

Meanwhile, we were delighted to welcome back Chris Johnson from Animal Encounters who gave our younger students an opportunity to meet some exotic animals including snakes, whilst others had a chance to learn about a variety of mini organisms in the Microscopes workshop.

The week was also an opportunity to learn about Careers in sectors which require scientific expertise, and we were delighted to welcome a retired Airline Pilot to give an interactive Question and Answer session with students about his time in the aviation industry and some background details and planning of what a flight involves.

Students also had the opportunities to learn how science can be used in the world of work and gain an understanding of what skills may be acquired to complete certain roles.

We were delighted to welcome Skyfarer to outline to students the benefits of drones in the real world, the services they offer as a company and challenge them to planning-related tasks in organising a drone mission, based on real-life case studies and scenarios and considering how to mitigate against and overcome any obstacles that may hinder the mission.

Following their previous visit earlier in the year, we were delighted to welcome back Babcock who tested students (crane)iums with their lego-based crane making workshop.

The session was designed to teach participants the idea of lean manufacturing and develop an understanding of some of the decisions that need to be made during the production process.

And finally, it was great to see our School Employee Partners Plessey, who delivered their practical based Escape Rooms challenge involving a variety of science-related and logic-based challenges, as well as a brief presentation of their engineering activities.

A super Science Week – the College would like to express their gratitude to all who contributed as well as to our keen participants who took part.
