Computer Science and ICT
Head of Department: Samantha Brooks
Welcome to the Computer Science and ICT Department at Ivybridge Community College.
Our department is committed to delivering an engaging, hands-on curriculum that brings together digital literacy, information technology, and computing. We aim to ensure every student becomes a confident, creative, capable user and developer of modern technology.
With a balance of creative and technical courses, we equip students with the essential digital skills needed in today’s technology-driven world. Whether their interests lie in programming, digital media, or practical ICT applications, students leave our department well-prepared for further study and future careers.
Key Stage 3
Our Key Stage 3 curriculum gives students a broad and engaging introduction to essential digital skills. They explore creative, practical and technical topics including digital imaging, spreadsheets, website design, text-based programming, online safety, identity theft awareness, binary, and control systems.
Through a mix of hands-on projects and theory, students build a strong foundation in computing while preparing for more advanced study in later years.
Key Stage 4
At Key Stage 4, students can choose to study GCSE Computer Science. This course takes a more technical and mathematical approach, helping students understand how computers work and how to think logically when solving problems.
Students explore key areas such as programming, computer systems, and computational thinking. In Year 11, they also have the chance to create their own programs, allowing them to apply the skills they’ve developed in a practical way.
This pathway is ideal for students interested in gaining a deeper understanding of technology and building strong programming skills.

Key Stage 5
At Key Stage 5, students can specialise further by choosing Computer Science or Information and Communication Technology, each offering a distinct pathway.
Computer Science
Students deepen their knowledge of computational thinking, programming, and computer hardware. They also complete a substantial project, developing an application in response to a real client brief, an opportunity to apply their programming skills in a practical, professional context.
