Key Stage 3
At Key Stage 3, students take part in a wide range of activities designed to provide a broad and balanced curriculum. The programme supports the development of students’ physical, cognitive, social and emotional wellbeing.
Students are grouped by ability, using information from primary schools alongside baseline assessments carried out by the department. All students receive four hours of physical activity over a two-week period.
Activities change each half-term, allowing students to experience a variety of sports—for example, football, followed by athletics. In addition, students take part in a regular creative lesson, alternating between gymnastics and dance, to further develop coordination, expression and confidence.
Key Stage 4
At Key Stage 4, the time allocated to physical activity varies depending on the pathway students choose. In Year 10, students receive three hours of physical activity per fortnight, increasing to four hours per fortnight in Year 11.
Students also have the option to study GCSE Physical Education or Cambridge National Sports Studies. Those who choose these courses receive an additional five hours of Physical Education per fortnight, consisting of four theory lessons and one practical lesson.
Further details about these courses can be found in the Sports Courses section of the Physical Education curriculum page.
