Transition Team Visits

A member of the Transition Team will visit all primary schools between April-June to meet with both students and the Year 6 class teacher.  Please rest assured that even if your child is the only student coming from their primary school, we will make a visit.  The aims of this visit are to speak with the students to answer any questions and alleviate any worries about the transition to Year 7.  The class teacher is encouraged to share any relevant information with the Transition Team including information about academic progress, SEND needs, extra-curricular interests and relevant social groupings.  All of this information is used to create the Year 7 tutor groups, organise sporting academies and inform lesson groupings.  We take students from over 60 primaries and try to carefully construct our tutor groups to support the transition of every student.  Where possible we try to ensure each student has some friendly faces in each tutor group.  However, it is important to remember that the tutor group is only together for 25 minutes each day.  Therefore, there are lots of other lessons throughout the week containing different groups of students and a chance to connect with a variety of their peers.

Year 6 Induction

All students who have a confirmed place will be contacted by the College in the last week of June to be notified of their Year 7 tutor group.  We then have a ‘Meet The Tutor’ Parent evening on:

Monday, 1 July 2024
from 5.30pm - 7.30pm

where we go through relevant information with parents and you can get to know the pastoral team.

There will then be a Year 6 Transition Day  on:

Thursday, 4 July 2024
from 8.40am - 3.00pm

where all students join us for the day to get to know their tutors, their peers and the College campus.  We look forward to meeting our new students!

Year 7 Tutor Induction - September

We have an extended Transition period for all Year 7s in September, where tutors, the pastoral team and the SEND department spend time getting to know our students.  Year 7 have a full day to settle in with only the Year 12 year group also in College.  At Ivybridge Community College we really want students to feel confident, happy and settled from their first day.  This extended transition period gives students the opportunity to get to know their way around, become familiar with the cashless system in the canteen and to meet key staff members.  Each tutor group is allocated a small group of Year 10 mentors who spend the first two weeks with the students and take them to and from lessons and breaks and are on hand to answer any questions no matter how small.  Within the first half term in September, you will be able to book a meeting to meet your child’s tutor but, of course, if there are any issues before then you can contact the College.
