College students are winners at the ImechE Cardboard Boat Race

Year 8 and 9  students took part in the annual Institution of Mechanical Engineers (ImechE ) Cardboard Boat Race at Plymouth’s Mayflower Steps on Saturday, 15 September 2018.

Following an initial briefing in June from Bruce Robinson of ImechE, the five College teams began weeks of designing, building and painting their boats.

The teams faced strong competition over the 200m course from local youth groups and schools.  Many succeeded in the water and we are delighted to announce that one of our entries, ‘Can’t Be Stopped’, was the overall competition winner.  The winning students produced a boat with a unique, innovative design without any additional adult help.

Our aptly named ‘The Ivy Mermaids’ came in third place.  The other Ivybridge College teams who participated in the race were ‘The Rainbow Fries’, ‘The Ivybridge Five’ and ‘Kevin’s Wonky Rainbow’.  With the latter winning the ‘Best Sinking Boat Award’.

The day was supported by local STEM companies, with plenty to keep participants and spectators occupied before the first races of the day.  The students really enjoyed the whole experience taking part in STEM taster sessions and workshops, helping them to understand more about engineering.

A very big well done to all of the staff and pupils involved.
