Staff Profiles

Tom Rainbow - Maths

I have worked at Ivybridge Community College since September 1998(!) and currently juggle my time as a teacher of Mathematics and as the Core Maths Lead for Devon. Prior to starting my current role I have been fortunate enough to work within many roles with acronyms: SLE, AST and have been a HoD and Deputy HoD.  All these roles have been fantastic for me because they have enabled me to do what I enjoy doing best - teaching Mathematics to young people.  I work closely with the Centre for Innovation in Mathematics Teaching (CIMT) who are based at Plymouth University and have worked there in the past running subject knowledge enhancement courses and contributing to their programme of provision for their PGCE students.  Working at Ivybridge Community College has allowed me to have a varied, rich and thoroughly enjoyable career - there are few colleges around whose size and ethos would enable someone to have such a range of experiences and career opportunities as I have been able to enjoy!

Alex Kirkbride - Computing and ICT

Before choosing a career in teaching I enjoyed a  highly successful experience in industry.  My choice to move into teaching was largely motivated by my wife’s stories about making a difference to young people’s futures in her role as a teacher, since then I haven’t looked back.  I enjoy my roles within Ivybridge Community College, leading the Computing and ICT Department as well as heading up E-Safety, E-Learning, assisting in Key Stage 4 academic intervention programmes and being one of the College’s designated Safeguarding Officers.  Ivybridge Community College has provided me with many fantastic opportunities and continues to inspire me to make a difference in the lives of young people.

Emily Israel - Head of Psychology and Sociology, Human Sciences Faculty

After completing a degree in Psychology and a PGCE in Secondary Science teaching, I started working at Ivybridge as an NQT teaching KS3 Science, Psychology and Sociology A Level.  As I progressed throughout my first couple years of teaching, I knew my passion lay with my degree subject and I was able to secure an Assistant Head of Department position (Human Sciences Faculty) in my third year of teaching and have since been promoted to Deputy Head of Department.  I have had some excellent professional development opportunities through Ivybridge, from working as a Mentor for trainee teachers and NQTS, completing the NPQML course and a Master’s degree, as well as being fully trained in Kagan teaching structures.  I have been able to work closely with the Teaching and Learning Team and I am very proud of the constant high standard of lessons delivered at Ivybridge.  It is a very fast paced school with high expectations of both students and staff, but this allows for many professional development opportunities or routes for promotion.

Chloe Fox - Teacher of ICT

After training in London I moved to the area and knew of Ivybridge Community College from their sporting successes.  Five years on and I have had many roles from Assistant Head of Year to E-Safety Officer and I enjoy the fact that there are so many opportunities in such an organisation.  I have been very lucky that the College has sponsored my Master’s degree and I have been able to implement some of my action research across the College.  As with any outstanding establishment it is hard work and some terms feel like a roller coaster but with such a supportive team around me, anything is possible.  I have made friends here I will cherish for life.

Hannah Martin - Assistant Principal

Ivybridge is an 'Outstanding College' to be a part of.  Having taught for ten years in an inner city school I was fortunate enough to be given the opportunity to work at Ivybridge Community College.  During the seven years at the College I have experienced several roles which has enabled me to utilise and build upon my existing skill set as a Leader; Assistant Head of PE, Head of Year, Head of Physical Education and currently Assistant Principal of Key Stage 4.  The College has high expectations of both staff and students and this contributes and underpins its success.  It is a dynamic and forward thinking College and one which I am proud to be a part of.
