PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Head of Department: Naomi Philpot

Welcome to our fantastic Physical Education Department.  We are a dynamic, committed and hardworking Department.  We have a range of ages and experience within our staff and many have responsibilities in the wider College.  Each colleague is involved in taking on responsibilities within the Department and all contribute to the high quality of extra - curricular opportunities available to the students.  The Department are enthusiastic about the provision and opportunities we provide to all students and we work constantly to develop our Department to maintain our high standards of delivery and provision.

Staffing

We currently have 16 full time Physical Education staff and a Dance specialist in charge of A Level and GSCE dance.

Naomi Philpot is Head of Physical Education.  There are two Deputy Heads: Nick Hitt (Deputy for PE Department) and John Ryrie (Deputy for PE and Performing arts)

There are also 3 Assistant Heads of Department:

  • David Cater (Key Stage 3)
  • Tom Brown (Key Stage 4)
  • Chris Brown (Key stage 5)

Facilities

The College and Physical Education Department prides itself on the facilities at the College. Currently there are the following:

  • 1 X Sports Hall
  • 1 X Gymnasium
  • 2 X Dance Studios
  • 1 X Fitness suite with 30 cardio vascular Machines
  • 1 X Strength and Conditioning Studio/Weights Room
  • 1 X Small All Weather Pitch
  • 1 X large All Weather Pitch
  • 1 X Field
  • 1 X tartan Running Track
  • 4 X PE specific Classrooms

Key Stage 3 

Students take part in a variety of activities throughout Key Stage 3.  These activities are designed to provide a broad and balanced breadth of study that develops the Physical, Cognitive and Social and Emotional wellbeing of students.  Students are in groups based on ability using data received from Primary Schools and a baseline assessment made by the Department.

Key stage 4 

All Students in Key Stage 4 take part in 4 hours of Physical Education at Year 9 and Year 10.  In Year 11 the students receive 3 hours over a two week period.  This is based on specialised pathways that students select at the start of each academic year.

GCSE students receive an addition 4 hours of Physical Education a fortnight which is divided into 3 theoretical lessons and 1 practical based lesson.  Delivery for the GCSE course follows the AQA Exam board.

Key Stage 5 

The Department has one of the largest Key Stage 5 cohorts in the College.

We currently offer both the AS and A Level Examination Course following OCR Exam board.

The Department also offers the very popular BTEC Extended National Diploma in Sport Development.

Extra-Curricular

The Physical Education Department is the flagship of the College offering a huge variety of Extra Curricular Sports.  There are currently four sports Academies running at the College for Gymnastics, Netball, Football and Rugby with professional coaches delivering the highest quality programmes to students.  A Tennis Academy is also run in partnership with the local tennis centre.

Extra Curricular Clubs take place before, during and after College to meet the high demand encouraged by the staff.  Currently we offer across lots of different sports and support off site clubs such as Surfing and Rowing.  Our fitness facilities are open to all students at lunchtime and after College for personal training.

The College has highly successful sports teams in numerous sports at a range of different levels and the success and participation across these activities is extremely high.
