Adjustment to the College Day by 15 Minutes commencing September 2019

Adjustment to the College Day by 15 Minutes

12 July 2019

Dear Parents and Carers

As the end of term approaches, can you please be aware that an end of year letter will be out shortly, which summarises the year and provides some useful information in preparation for next term.  This will be sent by email to you next week.

One important change will be an adjustment to the end of the College day to 3.15pm, commencing from 1 September 2019.  Following a period of consultation and a review across secondary schools; the Governing Board, Westcountry Schools Trust Chief Executive Officer and the Local Authority, have approved a lunch period of 45 minutes (1.30 – 2.15pm), allowing for an earlier start to the last lesson of the day.  All lessons will remain one hour periods, five lessons a day.

Please be assured that as a result of this small adjustment to the College day we will still provide the following:

  1. Enrichment Clubs and Study Support at lunchtime will be given priority passes for food.  Currently, after College clubs have a higher percentage of attendance and student feedback expressed the importance for lunchtime to relax and see friends.
  2. We shall be offering more seating arrangements for indoor dining and a two-sitting system to improve the queuing time, as a result of feedback from students and parents.
  3. An increase in the number of senior leaders being able to support lunchtime duty teams across the College campus.
  4. The Learning Resource Centre will continue to open during the lunchtime period to allow students to undertake independent learning and reading, and will still be open for those students wishing to continue with a quiet study space, after College.

All the bus companies that transport our students have approved this change and are able to support this arrangement.  In addition, we have also closely liaised with our local primary school, at Stowford and they are happy for us to proceed with the change.

Therefore, please be reassured that this decision has been made to support our students and I ask that you discuss the amendments to the timings of the day with your child.  A copy of this letter is available on the College’s website.
