Year 8 Learning and Exploring through Drama

Opportunities in Drama MED Theatre Drama Workshop for year 8 students

On Tuesday, 24 January, the busy and vibrant Drama Department invited local MED Theatre company from Moretonhampstead into College to deliver a drama experience that was a little out of the ordinary for 60 of our marvellous Year 8 students.  The day was such a success, and the students had such an eye-opening experience in using Drama to explore the way they can tell stories and create characters through movement and voice, that Mr Ellis asked one of the students to write about the event.  Here is what Morven Vincent had to say:

“When I first came to Ivybridge Community College and saw Drama on my timetable, I thought, ‘Great, this is going to be boring!’   However, when I arrived at the first lesson I realised that it was much more different than what I’d experienced previously at primary school.  In Year 8 I was really happy to be invited to a Drama Workshop.  We did loads of really fun stuff like contact improvisation and physical theatre.  We also did a few games at the beginning where we were divided into two groups and we had to use facial expressions and our body language to show whether we were either wolves, vampires or human monster hunters!  Towards the end of the workshop we did a bit of voice acting for a radio play.  During the voice acting activity five people were selected to be the voice actors, one person was the director, one person had headphones on to listen to how it sounded, one person was in charge of operating the recorder and another person was asked to stamp in dried dog food to create the sound effect of someone walking on gravel!  After my experiences with drama I highly recommend choosing it for GCSE if you are in Year 8 and for Year 7s I recommend joining one of the extra-curricular clubs.”

Indeed, there is so much on offer in the Drama Department, with our extra-curricular clubs catering for every interest within Drama, from Limelight Theatre Company, to the Junior Musical Theatre Group (JMTG) or the Technical Theatre Group, and even personalised LAMDA/RADA coaching.  At the core of our provision, the Drama Department have also launched fantastic new courses at GCSE, A Level and BTEC, providing an outstanding pathway for students who know that having excellent communication and interpersonal skills can only lead them on to success.
